Jesus’ Death & Burial
Think back to your years at disobedience school. Remember all those long, drawn out lectures on how to sin? Remember all that homework teaching you to do the wrong thing? No? Of course not! No one ever had to teach a child to be selfish or disobedient. That comes naturally because we are all born with a sin nature (Romans 3:23, 1 John 1:8). That is the lot we were born into (Genesis 3). But, thanks to Jesus, it is not our destiny!
Because of our choice to sin, we are separated from God. Isaiah 59:2 proclaims in no uncertain terms, “It’s your sins that have cut you off from God. Because of your sins, He has turned away and will not listen anymore.” We stand helpless outside of His beautiful kingdom with no way of our own to enter in.
Enter Jesus.
Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but He died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. – 1 Peter 3:18a
It’s not easy to take a deep look into the hours that Jesus hung on the cross. And some might even wish to hide them from children. But we know that this is the foundation of our salvation, and we are convinced that they are crucial for kids to explore. We walk kids through the events in a way they can understand. We dim the lights when “the whole land was covered with darkness,” we give them a visual of our sin being transferred to the only One who had no sin of His own, and we hear Jesus’ words ring out, “It is finished!”
We all must understand the depths to which our Savior went before we can rejoice in the glorious resurrection that brings us new life. “But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:57)
