Summary – The Last Supper & Judas’ Betrayal

If you were about to leave on an incredible and distant journey, what one thing would you want your beloved to remember? Would you leave a memento for them to reflect on?

As night fell outside the upper room, Jesus spent precious hours with his twelve companions. It was an evening heavy-laden with foreshadowing that the disciples did not comprehend. Jesus told of Judas’ betrayal and Peter’s denial. Jesus taught by example how to serve one another. And He handed out the bread and wine that stood for the unthinkable sacrifice He was about to make.

He took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. Then he said, “Take this and share it among yourselves. For I will not drink wine again until the Kingdom of God has come.”

He took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then He broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember Me. – Luke 22:17-19 NLT

In this lesson, we explore the dramatic symbolism that ties the elements of the Passover feast (instated some 1,200 years previous) to Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. In this way, we help kids understand that Jesus was always intended to be the Passover Lamb who takes away the sins of the world (1 Corinthians 5:7). Furthermore, we discuss the heart attitude that is required when we take communion (1 Corinthians 11:27-33).

Though many of our children are too young to participate in communion, it’s important that they understand why their church family remembers Jesus in this way. This sacrament should not be a mystery to them. Each time they see others taking part, they should remember what Jesus did for them. This will make it all the more special when they do join in.
