Summary Jesus Calms The Storm

There is no scientific law that explicitly states it, but it’s a principle we all understand. Two things cannot occupy the same space at the same time. Even when you fill an “empty” glass, the liquid displaces the air that once filled it. The inhabitancy of fear and faith is no exception to this rule. Jesus makes this point clear when He asks the disciples, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” (Matthew 8:26) Do you see the correlation? The two cannot fill the same space. One displaces the other. In this lesson, we even have a visible way to illustrate this invisible truth.

Both fear and faith reside in our imagination. Both project an outcome to a situation. Fear imagines the worst, while faith is convinced–beyond the shadow of a doubt–that God will only allow what’s best for us. Out on the violent sea, fear had filled the space in the disciples’ minds that was designed to hold faith. Then, with just a word, Jesus brought peace. And the disciples marveled.

Certainly this passage proves once again that Jesus holds power over all of nature. (Only man has the choice not to heed His command.) But the beautiful take-away for our kids is that they do not have to live life tied up in knots caused by worry and stress. They can take their fear to Jesus and He will displace it with faith. He will keep their minds from conjuring up the worst possible scenario and remind them that, “God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them.” (Romans 8:28)

The key to anxiety-free living is more of Jesus. As we study Him, rely on Him, and abide in Him, our faith expands and fills the crevices that once housed our fears.
