Summary Jesus Heals the Man of the Tombs

Peace. It eludes us. It eludes children. If you doubt that, ask a group of kids if they ever worry. Ask them what they worry about. It is paramount that we direct kids to Jesus to find the peace that only He can bring.

There was a man who lived in a graveyard on the coast. Peace eluded him. He was forced to live among the dead because he was a danger to the living. This man was filled with a brigade of demons that lived to torment him. We can imagine the noise, voices, clatter, and confusion that he could not escape. He was so afflicted that he screamed all day and night. It must have been a haunting sound, hearing his screams echo off of the rocky clefts in the middle of the night. These evil spirits even caused their victim to cut his own flesh.

Then the man came face to face with Jesus. The demons cowered in His presence and the merciless Legion begged for mercy (James 2:19). Outsmarting the demons, Jesus gave them what they asked for and they were destroyed.

A crowd soon gathered around Jesus, and they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons. He was sitting there fully clothed and perfectly sane, and they were all afraid. – Mark 5:15 NLT

What a transformation! The people who knew him could not believe their eyes. This wild man was now controlled–not by chains or armed guards; he was self-controlled (Galatians 5:22-23). This man was living proof that Jesus is the source of peace.

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” – John 14:27

There is no escaping the topic of demons and witchcraft in our world. So lets teach it to our kids in Biblical context. Let’s guide kids not to focus on the power of the enemy but the immeasurably greater power and peace of our Savior.
